RAWALPINDI: The district administration and the garrison authorities on Friday decided to hand over Naseerabad Bazaar on Peshawar Road to Rawalpindi Cantonment Board (RCB) and to get help of Rawalpindi Waste Management Company (RWMC) to improve sanitation in the cantonment areas.

The decisions were made at a meeting held at Station Headquarters with Station Commander Brigadier Salman Nazar in the chair.

Deputy Commissioner Tahir Farooq, Chaklala Cantonment Board (CCB) Cantonment Executive Officer Zaki Haider Rizvi, Parks and Horticulture Authority Director General Zaheer Anwar Jappa and other senior officials of district administration and cantonment boards attended the meeting.

Station Commander Brigadier Salman Nazar directed the district administration and local police to solve the issue of traffic congestion in the city and cantonment areas.

He asked the authorities concerned to take solid steps to resolve traffic congestion on city roads.

RWMC may be tasked with improving sanitation condition in cantt areas

He said immediate action should be taken to control the traffic congestion in Rawalpindi city and cantonment areas while orders were also issued to improve the sanitation system and condition of roads besides eliminating encroachments.

He said that all the government departments of the city and cantonment areas would work jointly to solve the problems of the residents and improve the civic facilities.

He said that LED lights would be installed in different areas of Rawalpindi city and cantonment.

He said that beautification drive of city and cantonment areas would be launched and unified efforts would be made to improve the condition of all the squares of the city and cantonment areas.

He said all available resources would be utilised to make the spring tree plantation drive a success.

Officials of the district administration informed the meeting that parking of oil tankers on main roads of the city and cantonment was causing traffic congestion.

It was decided to resolve the issue jointly and present a report in next meeting.

The meeting discussed the handing over of sanitation branch of Rawalpindi and Chaklala Cantonment Boards to Rawalpindi Waste Management Company and decided to start initial work in this regard.

A senior official of district administration told Dawn that the cantonment authorities wanted to hand over the sanitation work to RWMC but the company demanded fee for lifting the solid waste. The cantonment boards, on the other hand, do not have enough funds to pay fee to RWMC.

He said that the sanitation service in cantonment areas was handed over to RWMC, it would increase the cost of shifting the garbage from cantonment areas to landfill site.

He said the district administration had in principle decided to get the help of RWMC for cleanliness of cantonment areas.

It also discussed progress of work on development projects, repair work of different roads, spring plantation drive and several other issues.

The meeting decided to enhance number of police personnel deployment in and around Chaklala Scheme-III area to ensure security.
