HYDERABAD, Nov 30: Sindh Health and Education Development Society president Dr Zahid has said according to a UN report, 70,000 to 80,000 people in the country have HIV and Aids.

He was speaking at a seminar organized by the society at the press club here on Wednesday to create awareness among people about HIV and Aids.

Dr Zahid said 1,109 cases of HIV and 103 cases of Aids had been reported in Sindh. He said Aids was fast spreading in Sindh when compared to other provi-nces and added that Karachi had become a high risk city because it was an international port.

Society chairman Khalid Shafi said people of the province and the government would have to work jointly to fight the fatal diseases.

Programme manager Wajid Shams Memon observed that people of Sindh were unaware of the spread of HIV and Aids in the province. He said if preventive measures were not taken now, the situation would go beyond control.

Health specialist Dr Tufail Ahmad Bhatti, psychologist Seemab Khan, Ilyas Khokhar, Musawwar Ahmad and others also spoke at the seminar.

POWER SHUTDOWN: Almost the entire City taluka experienced power shutdown for several hours on Wednesday, creating a host of problems for people.

The shutdown affected the water supply system and sewerage. The Wasa has said Hesco observed shutdown from 9am to 2pm in the City TMA area.

In a statement, Wasa managing director said it would take two days to restore water supply and sewerage.
