GUJRAT: A student was shot dead and another sustained bullet injuries in a clash between two groups of college students on the GT Road in the precincts of Rehmania police on Friday.

As per police sources, two armed groups of students clashed near a filling station on the GT Road. In the crossfire between the groups, a student identified as Usman Pervez of Phulerwan village was hit by bullets and died on the spot, whereas another, Hamza Asif, of the same village sustained bullet injuries.

Rescue 1122 and police teams reached the spot and shifted the body and the injured student to the Aziz Bhatti Shaheed Teaching Hospital (ABSTH). The injured student is stated to be out of danger.

The body of the deceased was later handed over to his family after an autopsy.

Following the clash, the students who resorted to firing fled the scene.

Sub-Inspector Nauman Hassan, a spokesman for Gujrat police, told Dawn that District Police Officer Umar Salamat had taken notice of the incident and constituted a special team under Lalamusa Circle DSP to trace and arrest the killer(s).

Meanwhile, the police have lodged a case against two nominated suspects -- Danish Malhi of Lundpur and Arslan of Mianwali, who resided in the hostel of Swedish College, Gujrat, besides 15 unidentified suspects under sections 302, 324, 148 and 149 of Pakistan Penal Code on the report of Pervez Iqbal, the father of the deceased.

Police have started investigation into the case, without any arrest so far.

GIRL DIES: A 16-year-old girl died from injuries when a Farris wheel installed at a village fair in Khohaar area collapsed in Sara-i-Alamgir police precincts on Friday.

Police said Jaan Bibi of Multan had come to visit the fair held annually at the village in connection with a saint’s Urs, along with her family.

When she was enjoying a ride on Ferris wheel, it suddenly collapsed and resulted in her death on the spot, the witnesses said.

Police said the family of the deceased girl declined to lodge a case against the organisers of the fair after which her body was handed over to them.

Meanwhile, DPO Umar Salamat has suspended ASI Arshad, the in charge of Khohaar police post and ordered an inquiry against him.

Later in the night police registered a case against 11 people on the complaint of SI Shahid Imran .
