ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has decided to install 20 new water filtration plants in various parts of the capital city.

A press release issued by the civic agency on Friday said 80 filtration plants had already been installed recently. The 20 plants will become operational in two months.

In the past, the CDA had installed around 40 filtration plants in various areas of the city but they remained dysfunctional for a long time due to lack of proper maintenance. Many of them have been made functional again.

However, CDA officials said for proper maintenance of the filtration plants the civic agency should engage private companies under the social corporate responsibly (CSR).

An official said: “Installation of 100 new filtration plants is something that deserves appreciation but there should be a proper mechanism for repair and maintenance of the plants. A few years ago, I myself saw many plants without tabs. I think that have been repaired but to avoid such a situation in future there is a need to engage philanthropists or private firms under CSR for the maintenance of the plants,” the official said.

Meanwhile, the press release said a proposal for installation of filtration plants in I-14 and Alipur had also been submitted to the CDA management by the water supply directorate and after approval work on it will be started too.

“The CDA chairman appreciated the performance of the water supply directorate and directed it to take more steps for ensuring smooth supply of water to the consumers.”

The CDA also advised citizens to use water judiciously and avoid wasting it, warning fines will be imposed against wastage of water.

Deputy Director General (Water) Sardar Khan Zimri said the water filtration project will be completed in two months. He said the civic agency had adequate water storage for Ramazan.
