KARACHI: Five suspected robbers were shot at and arrested in a wounded condition after ‘encounters’ in different parts of the metropolis on Monday.

The New Karachi Industrial Area police said three suspected street criminals were arrested in a wounded condition after an exchange of fire.

They said a police patrol indicated them to stop near Bashir Chowk, but they resorted to firing. After an exchange of gunfire, police arrested three suspects —Naveed, 35, Shabbir Ahmed, 40, and Saghir, 36 — in injured condition.

The police claimed to have recovered three .30-bore pistols, four mobile phones, snatched cash and one motorbike from their custody.

They were shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment.

In another incident, a suspected criminal was shot at and wounded in an alleged encounter near Superhighway.

The Sohrab Goth police claimed that they indicated two suspects to stop for checking near Aligarh Society, Scheme-33. The suspects started firing, which was returned by the police. One suspect, Sadiq Khan, was injured in the crossfire and arrested.

The police claimed that the held suspect had a past criminal record as two cases were registered against him at the Mobina Town police station. One TT pistol, two mobile phones, ATM and CNIC cards were recovered from his custody. The injured was shifted to a hospital for treatment.

The Jamshed Quarters police also claimed to have arrested a robber after an exchange of fire in an injured condition.

An ‘encounter’ took place between the police and robbers near Peoples Chowrangi and later “one robber was arrested in injured condition”, said an official.

The held suspect was identified as Mohammad Usman, 25.
