FLAWED NARRATIVE: The political narrative of ‘foreign conspiracy’ and the consequent vilification of institutions are elements that are likely to be the stumbling blocks in the process of depoliticisation of the institutions. The political parties must not drag institutions into politics. Such trends can create a gulf between the people and the institutions. Issues should be discussed in parliament in line with established democratic norms.

URGENT INVESTIGATION: The so-called ‘foreign conspiracy’ stunt and the resulting volatile situation together underscore the need of proper investigation of the matter as a top national priority. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif rightly said that an in-camera enquiry should be conducted, involving all concerned, to put the record straight. This should be done as early as possible, and the findings of the enquiry should be made public.

HARBANSPURA ROAD: The main road in Harbanspura that leads to a public school is full of potholes, causing traffic slowdown all day long. People face great difficulty in the mornings when they leave for work or school. Students and parents often get stuck in traffic jams and reach their destinations behind schedule. The residents have made several appeals to the government, but no action has been taken to repair the road. The authorities concerned should take the matter seriously.

PIA REFORMS: This refers to the letter “PIA’s downfall” (March 31) that I had penned after my wife had a bad experience visiting the airline’s medical centre. I was surprised that the airline chief took notice of the problem, and meaningful reforms have already been initiated in the medical division. The focus is on getting relief to the retired, the aged and the infirm who cannot wait long hours because of their special needs. As they say, when there is a will, there is a way!
