ISLAMABAD: Two officials of the capital police were suspended over their alleged involvement in taking bribe from an elderly man for his release.

A spokesman for the police said the policemen were suspended after a video of the citizen went viral on social media. In the video, the man alleged that he was picked up by the police and detained at the Secretariat police station.

He also alleged that the police took Rs8,700 from him and released him after 12 hours’ detention.

Over the allegation, an inquiry has also been ordered, the spokesman said, adding legal action would be taken against the officials if the allegation was proved.

He said the elderly man was identified as Shah Jehan. He was picked up from Dhokri Chowk along with three other people by an anti-beggar squad and shifted to the police station.

Later, a case was registered against them.

The policemen who were suspended were members of the anti-beggar squad, he said.
