MIRPURKHAS, Dec 6: The sowing of wheat in Mirpurkhas, Sanghar and Umerkot districts has been delayed due to delay in harvesting of sugarcane because of a row between sugar mill owners and growers.

Sugarcane crop is lying unharvested in a huge area in these districts.

The controversy is delaying wheat sowing causing serious concern among growers.

Last year after harvesting of sugarcane, the growers sowed wheat on time.

After sowing of wheat growers tried to release water in two terms before closure of canals for annual desilting which enabled them to work for maturity of crop.

In the current season, cane growers were not harvesting crop in protest and demanding Rs60 per maund for the commodity.

The mill owners have also not begun crushing due to cane supplies in smaller quantities.

The small growers demanded that the government should settle the dispute and ensure start of crushing in Sindh.
