CHILD LABOUR: The government banned child domestic labour for the first time in August 2020. Although the Employment of Children Act 1991 addressed the issue, the country continues to have difficulties in implementing the legislation. In 2020, the government also funded and participated in programmes to eliminate and prevent child labour. Despite all efforts by successive governments, no considerable action plan has been executed. The menace of child labour can only be eradicated through long-term coordinated efforts.

PLASTIC IN FOOD: I recently went to a local restaurant with my friends and ordered food. After taking a few bites, I felt something was wrong with the taste. It turned out that there were pieces of plastic in the curry. Plastic particles in food may lead to several diseases. All concerned must ensure that the food served at eateries is of acceptable quality and should not endanger the health of the consumers.

NEPOTISM: A number of people have been appointed on various positions in a university in Murree on the basis of nepotism and favouritism. A candidate holding a degree in Physics has been hired on an IT-related position. Another one with a degree in Zoology has been appointed a lecturer in Environmental Science. Several competent candidates with relevant academic qualifications and experience were rejected. This blatant disregard of merit needs to be condemned.

EXPENSIVE HOSTELS: Many students move to large cities for education. Getting a reasonable accommodation is a major problem they face. The condition of hostels is pathetic, and students are forced to live in an unhygienic environment. Due to limited space in government hostels, many students have to opt for private hostels that are seriously expensive. The authorities concerned should provide the students with a safe and comfortable stay in hostels.
