SWABI: A young man belonging to Abbottabad city drowned in the Indus River and two other persons were killed and five injured in separate incidents here on Thursday.

Rescue 1122 officials said that Samiullah, 22, who came from Abbottabad, was swimming along with his friends in Tarbela Dam downstream in the Indus River when he slipped into deep water and could not manage to come out.

Local divers soon started efforts and later they were joined by a rescue team to recover the body.

Luqman Khan, an official of Rescue 1122, said that after hectic efforts they recovered the body and handed it over to the bereaved family.

In another incident, Sajjad Ahmad, 25, a resident of Bamkhel village, was seriously injured when two unidentified motorcyclists opened fire on him. He was taken to Bacha Khan Hospital Complex, Shahmansoor, where doctors pronounced him dead. His family said they had no enmity with anyone.

Police registered an FIR and have started investigations.

In Marghuz village, a minor girl identified as Hajira Bibi died when she slipped into a recently-constructed sewage drain.

In Malikabad village, Noor Rehman, 57, Jawad Khan, 43, and a woman were injured when two motorcycles collided.Similarly, Ishfaq, 30, and Zubair Khan, 27, were also injured in collision of motorcycles.

Meanwhile, fire broke out in the house of one Tariq Ahmad in Gandaf village on Thursday. The cause of fire was state to be electric short-circuit.

The rescue firefighters controlled the fire and prevented it spreading to the adjacent buildings.

NURSES PROTEST: Nurses of Bacha Khan Medical Complex, Shahmansoor, have staged a protest against the killing of their colleague in Nowshera district, and demanded arrest of the culprits.

They gathered on the hospital premises and walked through its different sections while holding placards inscribed with the demand for immediate arrest of the assailants.

The protesters said it was the duty of the government to provide security to the nurses. Later, they dispersed, but warned they would stage more protests if the killers of their colleague were not arrested.
