HARIPUR: Patwaris went on an indefinite strike here on Thursday against the alleged torture of a member of their community by a policeman here.

The Anjuman-i-Patwariyan Haripur had given the strike call during a meeting on Wednesday evening.

Paniyan Halqa patwari Azeemullah Khan formally complained to the deputy commissioner that he was busy working in his office after the demarcation of a land in the village when police constable Mohammad Tahir showed up with five men and beat him up.

He said he approached the local police station for the registration of an FIR over the torture, but to no avail.

Mr Azeemullah contacted Anjuman-i-Patwariyan president Khanzada Khan Jadoon, who called an emergency meeting of the association, which announced the closure of all patwarkhanas in the district until the registration of a case against the accused.

Patwaris observed a complete strike across the district.

Meanwhile, some local elders are understood to be contact with the complainant and the accused for a compromise.
