KARACHI: Armed muggers shot at and wounded a young man even he did not try to put up any resistance in the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) area in the small hours of Sunday morning, police said.

They identified the wounded youth as Sufiyan Khan Niazi, 24, and said he was shifted to a private hospital in Clifton where his condition was stated to be improving.

SSP-South Asad Raza said that Sufiyan and some of his friends had gone to a gaming place located in Nishat Commercial, DHA. They were standing on a street when armed men riding a motorbike emerged there, held them at gunpoint and demanded their cell phones and valuables.

CCTV footage that went viral on social media showed one of the muggers, clad in pants and shirts, shot Sufiyan when he moved towards him apparently to hand his cell phone to him. He fell on the road and another mugger collected cell phones from his four friends and both rode away safely.

The bullet entered his jaw and exited through the neck, the SSP said, adding that he had visited the crime scene as well as the South City Hospital, where the wounded was under treatment. “He was under treatment but stable,” he said.

He said that investigators had obtained CCTV footage from three different areas, conducted raids and detained three suspects from Korangi who resembled to the muggers seen in the footage.

They were being interrogated while the geofencing of the area was under way.

The SSP admitted that providing security particularly on weekends in DHA had become a challenge for police, as a large number of motorcyclists flocked to Seaview from different parts of the metropolis.
