LAHORE: A United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) and a Pakistani textile mills have signed an agreement to strengthen their cooperation and promote gender equality at the workplace through capacity building initiatives on harassment and redressal mechanism and gender responsive policies and procurement, among others.

The agreement was signed on Thursday at a ceremony held here by Sharmeela Rassool, Country Representative, UN Women Pakistan, and Wajeeha Khalid -- Business Head, Nishat Mills Limited, says a press release.

Nishat Mills is also the signatory to global Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs).

“We strongly believe that partnerships like these can make a difference in promoting safer workplaces. The economic empowerment of women simply cannot be achieved without the engagement of the private sector,” said Ms Rassool.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms Khalid said: “Nishat Apparel makes diligent efforts to work towards creating a work environment that is based on merit, inclusion and diversity, and is strongly committed to Women Empowerment Principles.

She said the Nishat Mills would continue working to change the economic outlook for women along its entire supply chain.
