KARACHI: Lawmaker and television personality Aamir Liaquat Hussain was laid to rest on Friday after hours-long impasse between police and his family over his post-mortem examination.

He passed away at his home in Khudadad Colony on Thursday.

The funeral prayers were held at the Abdullah Shah Ghazi shrine in Clifton. His son, Ahmed Aamir, who arrived from abroad for the funeral, led the prayers.

A large number of people, including politicians, attended the funeral.

He was laid to rest near the graves of his parents on the premises of the shrine.

Earlier, a police spokesperson said in a statement that investigators had initiated proceedings under Section 174 (police to inquire to report in suicide, etc) of the criminal procedure code for his post-mortem examination.

Police surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed along with a judicial magistrate arrived at a local morgue, where the body was kept.

However, the late politician’s family had appeared before a judicial magistrate (East) as the police referred the matter to court. The magistrate got statements of the heirs, who did not give their consent for an autopsy. Subsequently, the body was handed over to the relatives for burial.

On Thursday, police told Dawn that according to Hussain’s domestic staff, he was not feeling well on Wednesday night, but did not go for a medical check-up. His health deteriorated in the morning, when he was taken to the Aga Khan University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
