HYDERABAD, Dec 11: The Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz has given a call for a province-wide strike on Dec 20 against President Gen Pervez Musharraf’s Sindh visit to muster support for the Kalabagh dam and Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim’s remarks on the issue.

The party made the announcement at a news conference at its media centre in Qasimabad on Sunday.

JSQM chairman Bashir Qureshi said the party’s national congress at its meeting in Sann on Saturday had discussed the dam issue and decided to give the call for a complete strike.

Referring to remarks of the chief minister on the proposed Kalabagh dam, he said people of Sindh would not accept what he called the anti-Sindh project.

He claimed that the River Indus had been the property of Sindh for time immemorial and people of the province would spare no sacrifices to protect their heritage.

He warned that if any Sindhi was found involved in the conspiracy against the province, he would find it difficult to live in Sindh.

He said the government had no respect for the opinion of people of Sindh and reminded the rulers that the Kalabagh dam had been rejected by three provincial assemblies, experts and people.

He alleged that the chief minister had taken a U-turn on the dam issue which indicated that he had accepted the post on the condition that he would not oppose the project.

Mr Qureshi said he would not attend any meeting called by the government on the Kalabagh dam issue.

He also appealed to Urdu-speaking people to observe the strike on Dec 20.

Dr Niaz Kalani, Dr Safdar Sarki and Sagar Hanif Burdi were present on the occasion.
