TOBA TEK SINGH: Robbers shot at and injured a policeman critically during a robbery at Gojra on Friday while one of the robbers was also wounded by the firing of the policeman.

According to Gojra City police, two robbers broke into the house of one Sultan Ahmad in Bilal Colony who made a call to the police emergency 15.

The robbers snatched Rs600,000 cash and gold ornaments worth more than Rs1m from the family. As the robbers were collecting the valuables, Majid Qayyum, a policeman of the City Police Station, arrived there on his motorcycle. As soon as the robbers saw the policeman, they opened fire on him, leaving him injured.

The policeman retaliated despite his injuries and shot a robber. However, both the robbers succeeded to flee on a motorcycle.

Injured Qayyum was admitted to Tehsil Headquarters Hospital, Gojra, where District Police Officer Rana Shoaib Mahmood visited him and lauded him for his bravery. Later, the THQ hospital doctors referred the wounded policeman to the Faisalabad Allied Hospital.

ACCIDENTS: A labourer died when a stone-laden truck overturned near the industrial estate in the Chak Jhumra area.

Rescue 1122 said that deceased Muhammad Kashif (40) was sitting on the stone on the back of the truck when it overturned and he was buried under it. He was already dead when the rescuers pulled him out.

LAWYERS: Lawyers at Shorkot observed a strike against Rs15 hike in petrol and diesel prices announced by the government.

Addressing the general body meeting, Shorkot Bar Association President Rashid Ali Chaudhry and General Secretary Mehr Suhail Raza Kamlana said the lawyers of Shorkot belonged to the farmers’ community and as a result of the record rate of diesel the farmers would have no other option but to abandon farming.

They condemned the government for its failure to ensure provision of fertilisers to the farmers.
