BAHAWALPUR: The Lodhran police claimed to have killed a robber and injured his accomplice in an encounter near Kund Ahmad Hassan here on Sunday.

DPO’s PRO Imran Umar said the police officials deployed at a picket near Kund Ahmad Hassan tried to stop two suspected motorcyclists who, in reaction, opened fire. He said the police team retaliated with return fire as a result of which one of the suspects was shot dead while his accomplice was injured and made good his escape.

Police said the suspect was killed in the firing of his accomplice. Later, a team took into custody a motorcycle and two goats whose mouths were taped by the suspects. Officials registered a case against the two and sent the body of the deceased to the Kahrore Pucca THQ hospital.

Police claimed that they later arrested the absconder.

RESCUE 1122: The Punjab Directorate of Emergency Rescue 1122 on Sunday began functioning by providing service in Yazman, the tehsil headquarters.

Federal Minister for Food and Research Tariq Bashir Cheema inaugurated the newly-built station. MPA Ehsanul Haq Chaudhry and Assistant Commissioner Mujahid Abbas accompanied the minister.

In his inaugural speech, the minister said the emergency service would be expanded to the rural areas of tehsil with an addition of more ambulances and motorbike ambulances also would be introduced to facilitate people.

District Emergency Officer Baqir Hussain said the new building had been built at a cost of about Rs20 million. Besides two ambulances, a fire station engine and other heavy machinery would be added to the station soon, he said while promising round-the-clock service to the distressed.

SANITARY ISSUE: Commissioner Raja Jahangir Anwar has directed the officials of the Metropolitan Corporation to improve the sanitary conditions in the old Walled City.

Taking notice of public complaints about the faulty underground sewerage system and chocked sewer lines in the narrow streets of Chah Fateh Khan and Zanana Hospital Road, the commissioner paid a surprise visit and asked the officials to fix the problem otherwise action would be taken against them. He also asked the officials to ensure providing manhole covers without delay.
