AWAITING RELIEF: Awaran suffered a destructive earthquake in 2013 that left hundreds of thousands of people homeless and hapless. Subsequently, the government continued to announce relief packages worth millions for the affected families. As many as nine years later, the victims are still awaiting the promised compensation. The government should immediately provide the relief fund to the deserving families.

INVOKING ARTICLE 6: The recent detailed judgement of the Supreme Court of Pakistan on the ruling of the National Assembly deputy speaker has dismissed all claims related to some American conspiracy behind the removal of the previous government. In additional notes to the decision, one member of the bench has asserted that the violation of the Constitution may invoke Article 6, which describes such an act as high treason. If such charges are pressed, things may take a new turn and some politicians might find themselves in hot water.

AN EDUCATIONAL APATHY: Despite having as many as 188 degree-awarding institutions recognised by the Higher Education Commission (HEC), the standard of education in the country seems to have been sliding down. For instance, a big chunk of the graduates are unable to write a simple error-free employment application. Moreover, filling out a simple form seems to be a Herculean task to many. The apathy towards education needs to end soon.

QUETTA RAINS: The recent monsoon rains have left life all but paralysed in Quetta. The drainage system, which was struggling even before the rains, today stands collapsed. As a consequence, street inundated by sewage-mixed water is a common a sight in the provincial capital. Even a drizzle is now enough to cause gushing gutters, speaking volumes about the ineptness of the city administration. The government should chalk out a practical plan regarding the city’s drainage system.
