CAIRO: Egypt and Libya today [Aug 2] agreed to merge into a single state — the biggest in Africa — on Sept. 1, 1973. The announcement was made simultaneously over Radio Cairo and Radio Tripoli. The announcement said Presidents Anwar Sadat and Moemer El Gaddafi feel that in this phase the Arab nations will embark on a new state of hope. Cairo Radio announced the union would be founded on “the most solid basis.” The Radio report said all steps to achieve the complete union of the two countries are to be put into effect before November.

The Radio, which was quoting from the “historic” communique signed by Presidents Sadat and Gaddafi after their three days to talks in Libya, said that the plan for total union did not affect the Federation of Arab Republics (grouping Egypt, Libya and Syria) set up in Benghazi in 1970. — News agencies

[Meanwhile, as reported by news agencies in Hyderabad,] One person was reported killed and 12 others injured, three of them seriously, when somebody threw a hand-grenade near Muslim College where Mr G.M. Syed, President, Jeeay Sind Mahaz, was to address a meeting tonight [Aug 2]. No harm was done to Mr G.M. Syed.
