BAHAWALPUR: About 60 persons were killed and 150 injured when the Karachi-bound Tezrao rammed into a standing goods train at Liaquatpur Railway Station, 68 miles from here at 5 a.m. today [Aug 6], according to assistant commissioner of Liaquatpur. … The driver of the Tezrao applied the emergency brakes but it was too late and the train rammed into the rear of the goods train. On seeing sure death, the driver and the fireman jumped out of the train and were saved. Sources at the Railway headquarters in Lahore said relief trains were immediately rushed to the spot. Multan divisional staff, Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Railway Board had already reached the place of accident. [Meanwhile, as reported by the newspaper’s special representative in Rawalpindi,] A military spokesman said … that the first meeting of the representatives of Pakistan and Indian Army Chiefs of Staff will be held at Suchetgarh on the Indian side of the line of control on Aug 10. He said the two military officers during their meeting will hold discussions to determine the actual line of control in Jammu and Kashmir resulting from the ceasefire of Dec 17 and “as existing today”.
