UNITED NATIONS: Security Council members, striving to avert a Chinese veto, today agreed to defer until August 21 further consideration of Bangladesh’s application for U.N. membership. Earlier, last night [Aug 10] the Council had referred the application of Bangladesh to its Committee on Admissions, overriding strong objections by China.

The Committee comprising all 15 Council members, met today behind closed doors to consider the application. … The decision followed a warning by the Chinese delegation that it would veto any resolution recommending Bangladesh’s admission. It is possible that behind-the-scenes moves may persuade the Chinese to change their veto threat. … — Agencies

[Meanwhile, as reported by agencies in Sial­kot] Pakistani and Indian Military Commanders continued their discussions on procedures for delineation in the disturbed areas for the second day at Suchetgarh. … Pakistan and Indian military Commanders in Jammu and Kashmir are expected to take 15 to 20 days to agree on the line dividing areas controlled by their forces, it was announced today [Aug 11]. Lt-Gen P.S. Bhagat of India said the work would begin within five days.
