KARACHI: The Pakistan Constituent Assembly today [Aug 12] appointed a committee of 16 members to advise the Assembly on the fundamental rights of citizens of Pakistan and on matters relating to the minorities, with power to the President to nominate not more than 7 other members of the Assembly. The resolution which was moved by Mr. Liaquat Ali Khan was adopted without discussion.

The Assembly also passed a resolution after a lively debate that Mr. M.A. Jinnah be addressed as Qaed-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, Governor-General of Pakistan in all official acts, documents, letters and correspondence from August 15, 1947. … In moving the resolution on the appointment of the committee to advise on fundamental rights of citizens and on minorities, Mr. Liaquat Ali Khan said that the Constituent Assembly should have the benefit of a committee which could examine these questions in detail.

[Meanwhile, as reported from Lahore,] The Lahore Corporation has sanctioned a sum of Rs. 2,000 for the celebration of Independence Day on August 15. A Celebration Committee consisting of the Mayor, the Chief Executive Officer and the Secretary of the Corporation has been formed. The original proposal for the grant of Rs. 5,500 for the celebrations was opposed by some Councillors … who urged that the amount should be utilised in providing relief to sufferers of the disturbances.
