With monsoon not quite ready to leave us alone yet, life is far from normal in Karachi. A case in point is the University of Karachi where rainwater accumulated on the rooftops of various buildings continues to drip down through the ceilings. Students are told to take classes in libraries and seminar halls that have a limited number of chairs, forcing the students to share one chair with another colleague! I wonder where the maintenance funds have gone.

POLITICISING CHARITY: Every time the opposition leader uses an example of Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital to extricate himself from political and legal charges, he only ends up politicising a charitable and non-political entity. Restoring people’s trust and gaining political

strength through a charitable venture is not a good idea for him or for the charity itself.

NATURE’S TEST: It is as if Nature wants to expose the incompetence of governments and bureaucrats in the country through consistent rains and their aftermath. In the wake of an extended monsoon season this year, almost the entire country is floating. Caught up in their own inter-twined world of transfers and postings, the state machinery has failed to respond to the emergency in an effective manner. How long will it take our bureaucracy to attain maturity?

COST OF DEVELOPMENT: The report earlier this year about the construction of a new underpass in Gulistan-i-Jauhar and the closure of the main route for at least one year is a rather alarming situation that the residents should get ready to suffer in the days ahead. I do realise the importance of infrastructure, but it should not be built at the cost of human convenience. Since the news has unfolded, area residents are concerned about how they will be able to carry out their daily commute once the main route is closed for traffic.
