NEW DELHI: “We are dealing with a situation which is analogous to war and we are going to deal with it on a war basis… . There is going to be no loosening in the future in dealing with this situation,” said Pandit Nehru, Prime Minister of Hindustan, in a broadcast tonight [Sept 9] on the communal disturbances.

Describing the situation as “a very serious crisis” and stating that … Delhi was “none too pleasant a place to live in,” Pandit Nehru said: “I am ashamed of the things that my people have done and I fear that the disgrace and the consequences of the evil deeds will remain with us for a long time.”

[Meanwhile, as reported from Karachi,] Five Muslims were injured when a country-made bomb exploded on Embankment Road, near the Lea Market, Karachi, at 5-15 p.m. on Tuesday [Sept 9]. … Four young men entered the flats occupied by 23 Muslim women operators in Satnam House near Kashmir Hotel… . They asked the inmates to vacate the flats, otherwise they would be forcibly thrown out. The threat was repeated again in the afternoon. The flats are in a predominantly Hindu locality.
