BAHAWALPUR: A woman allegedly attempted self-immolation inside the Ahmedpur East city police station after dowsing herself in petrol on Monday in protest against police for not registering her rape complaint.

As per sources, the woman ‘S’ visited the police station to file a complaint against some gangsters who allegedly forced their entry into her house in Shaukat Colony in Uch Sharif, subjected her to rape and kidnapped her minor daughter.

When Uch police did not entertain her complaint, she went to Ahmedpur East police station where she dowsed herself in petrol and set fire in protest against police.

However, policemen and others present there extinguished the fire and shifted the woman to hospital.

Bahawalpur district police spokesperson Aamir Nazir told Dawn that the alleged rape was committed last month and the woman’s complaint was duly registered.

He said the police also booked the woman for attempting suicide.

PROBE: Lodhran city police have started investigation into the incident where a man and his son were allegedly burnt alive on Sunday in a gas-triggered fire in a house in Dr Ameerwali Gali.

Sources says the probe into the deaths of Shahbaz Nawaz and his son Umar was launched after police investigating team noticed blood on the floor of the house’s kitchen where the gas blast had allegedly occurred and suspected foul play.

Lodhran police spokesperson said the family of the deceased persons was allowed their burial after the postmortem examination of the bodies of the father and son at the district headquarters hospital on Monday.

He said the police had initially registered a report under section 174 of the CrPC and sent samples of the bodies for forensic analysis.

He said further legal action would be taken in the light of reports of postmortem and forensic analysis.
