PESHAWAR: Dr Quraish Khan, an assistant inspector general (AIG) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police, has been nominated for the UN Women Champion Award in recognition of his contribution to establish the first-ever women reporting centre in Parachinar, Kurram district.

A statement issued here said that the women reporting centre, which was first in the merged districts, was set up on self-help basis in 2020.

It said the centre ushered in an era of gender responsive policing in the region and it received public appreciation.

The centre played an instrumental role in reducing violence against women in the area and scores of cases were registered under the Ghag Act (forcible marriages) after its inception.

This initiative is a huge stride to strengthen the regular policing regime in merged districts and it is believed that such steps would bring changes in the police culture while responding to specific needs of women victims of violence and crimes.
