BAHAWALPUR: A woman who had attempted suicide by setting herself on fire inside Ahmedpur East police station on Oct 3 in protest against non-registration of her rape complaint, succumbed to her burns at the Bahawal Victoria Hospital here on Tuesday.

Shehnaz Bibi, a resident of Shaukat Colony in Uch Sharif, had visited the Uch police station to file a complaint against some gangsters who had allegedly forced their entry into her house, subjected her to rape and abducted her minor daughter.

When Uch police did not entertain her complaint, she went to Ahmedpur East police station where she dowsed herself in petrol and set herself on fire in protest against police.

However, policemen and others present there extinguished the fire and shifted the woman to hospital.

Bahawalpur district police spokesperson had claimed that the alleged rape was committed last month and the woman’s complaint was duly registered.

He said the police also booked Shehnaz for attempting suicide.Police claim that District Police Officer Aibadat Nisar suspended four police officials, including an inspector, for their alleged negligence in the case.

GANGS BUSTED: Lodhran city police claim to have smashed two gangs of motorcycle thieves and snatchers, arresting their six members.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Lodhran city circle DSP Khalid Javed told the media that police smashed two gangs involved in snatching and stealing motorcycles and arrested six criminals.

He claimed the police also recovered 14 snatched or stolen motorcycles worth Rs700,000 and Rs500,000 cash from the arrested suspects.

He said the suspects also confessed to have stolen and snatched 31 motorcycles, adding that which the remaining bikes would also be recovered from them.
