[Meanwhile] Talking to newsmen in Pesha­war, Mufti Mahmud [NWFP Chief Minister] said that the talks were held in a pleasant atmosphere and all the outstanding issues could be thrashed out with realistic attitude. … Asked about the question of provincial autonomy, Mufti Mahmud said that the NAP and JUI were opposed to a “crippled Centre.” “We wish to make the Centre strong, but this should not mean that the legitimate provincial rights should be trampled”, he said... . — News agencies

[Meanwhile, as reported by news agencies in Moscow,] A Soviet airliner with a number of foreign tourists abroad crashed near Moscow airport ... and Western airline official put the death count at 170. There was no immediate confirmation of the figure from Soviet officials who have only the bare details of the crash of the Soviet Aeroflot Ilyushin-62 which was flying to Moscow from Leningrad.
