KARACHI: Sindh Rangers and police carried out an intelligence-based joint action in Liaquatabad to arrest a suspected terrorist who, according to them, had been involved in extortion, murders and attempted murders, besides acts of terrorism.

A spokesperson for the paramilitary force identified the suspect as Waseem alias Javed Boss Tunda, and said that he had been a worker of Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Altaf in Liaquatabad sector.

“The suspect along with his other colleagues had received training from Indian intelligence agency, the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), in gun running and preparing and using explosive material,” according to the Sindh Rangers’ press release.

“He had been operating a team of hit-men linked with the MQM-Altaf and involved in several targeted killings.”

During initial interrogation, the suspect confessed to have been involved in extortion, murders, attempted murders and terrorism on a large scale in Karachi till Nov 2013 under directions of MQM-Altaf, the press release added.

It said that after an operation launched in Karachi in 2013, the suspect had fled abroad. He returned to Karachi recently, it said, adding that raids were being conducted for the arrest of his associates.

In another joint action, Rangers and police arrested a suspect, Siddique Baba, allegedly involved in the targeted killing of three firemen. The weapon used in the attack was seized from him, said the Rangers spokesperson.

The held suspect along with his associates had entered the Korangi fire station at midnight on Sept 31-October 1 and shot dead two firemen, Mehboob and Amir, and injured third one, Irshad. The latter had succumbed to his wounds during treatment, the spokesperson said.
