GUJRAT: The Punjab government has created two more tehsils in Gujrat district -- Jalalpur Jattan and Kunjah -- taking the total number of tehsils in the district to five.
With the addition of these two tehsils, the district now comprises Gujrat, Kharian, Sara-i-Alamgir, Jalalpur Jattan and Kunjah tehsils.
However, after the readjustment of revenue estates of the previous three, Gujrat has become the smallest tehsil in the district, while Kharian the biggest one with 396 revenue estates. Now Jalalpur Jattan tehsil has 325 revenue estates, followed by 144 of Kunjah and 111 of Sara-i-Alamgir.
The Punjab Board of Revenue (BoR) has formally notified the creation of the two new tehsils of Gujrat district that was upgraded to a division in August, 2022. The divisional complex of Gujrat will be established in Kunjah tehsil.
After inclusion of Gujrat’s suburban villages like Kathala, Gurali, Gurala, Tara Garh, Ghazi Chak, located on the old GT road in Kunjah tehsil, Gujrat tehsil has been reduced mainly to the city limits.
Similarly, the towns of Jalalpur Jattan, Tanda, Karianwala and Fatehpur etc have been included in Jalalpur Jattan tehsil, whereas small towns like Shadiwal and Mungowal have been included into Kunjah tehsil that is also given several revenue estates of Kharian tehsil.
Official sources say that though the budget for the new tehsils have been approved, the number of posts or human resource for them are awaited, while the district administration has yet to finalise the place for setting up tehsil offices.
