BAJAUR: The authorities on Wednesday razed encroachments in Nawagai Bazaar to ensure smooth flow of traffic and shoppers in the Bajaur district’s third largest commercial hub.

Encroachments, including a number of makeshift shops and illegal bus stands, were removed during the drive launched by the tehsil municipal administration, according to a statement.

The statement said the action was launched after the vendors had failed to dismantle the structures despite being served notices.

Meanwhile, a house was gutted in a fire in Nawagai on Wednesday.

Rescue 1122 officials and residents said the incident happened in Anarbagh area, where house of Bakht Muneer caught fire owing to unknown reasons.

Firefighters of Rescue 1122 with the help of locals put out the fire but not before the blaze had destroyed most of the household items.

Separately, residents of various areas of Salarzai tehsil on Wednesday expressed resentment over prolonged power suspension continuing for several weeks, and threatened to take to streets if the power supply wasn’t restored within two days.

Talking to reporters, they said Gaang, Tangi, Parmakhai, Sahibabad and Sabirshah areas had been without electricity for over three weeks, causing hardships to residents.

Farmanullah, the Tangi village council chairman, said they had brought the issue into the notice of the Tribal Electric Supply Company (Tesco) some two weeks ago, and the officials promised to restore power supply to the areas within two days, but to no avail.
