LAHORE: Governor/Chancellor Balighur Rehman on Monday approved the proposed budget 2022-23 of the King Edward Medical University, asking it to pay more attention to research.

Presiding over the 14th meeting of the varsity’s senate, the chancellor also approved the supplementary budget 2021-22.

He also inaugurated a solar panel and forensic lecture theatre prepared for the Quaid-i-Azam block at a cost of Rs8 million. The chancellor confirmed the proceedings of the previous meeting of the senate of King Edward Medical University.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Rehman said the universities around the world focus on research and development. The varsities here needed to promote technology and research, he stressed. He said the KEMU should be a role model in robotic surgery for which all possible support would be given.

“The universities should evolve effective mechanisms to help people in flood-affected areas to recover from trauma. The students should go to the flood-affected areas and help the people there, especially the children, to recover from the emotional and psychological effects of the flood,” he said.

The governor said it had always been his wish that no student should be deprived of education due to lack of financial resources. The university should establish an endowment fund of Rs5 billion, which should be spent on the education of deserving students, he said.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Mahmood Ayaz highlighted the ongoing and completed projects in the university. He said in a short period of three months after taking charge of the post of VC, he established the student facilitation centre, e-log monitoring system, patient referral system, flood relief mission and library information system.

He said on the instructions of the governor King Edward Medical University had also started a scholarship programme. He said the senate would ensure the implementation of the decisions of the meeting.
