LEGAL CLARITY: The fact that all kinds of high-profile cases are being filed in courts reminded me of a few lines in a lighter vein that I had read long ago, perhaps in the Reader’s Digest. It went something like this: The lawyers’ community was up in arms protesting against the ‘wrong’ trend set by British parliament. The placards read, ‘If parliamentarians continue drafting laws with such clarity, we are all going to starve’. I am glad lawyers face no such problems in our country.

NAMING AN AIRPORT: The National Assembly recently passed a resolution, seeking to name Islamabad’s new airport after Benazir Bhutto. One may point out that a resolution does not carry any weight. It is not a piece of legislation. The name of Pakistan’s first prime minister, Shaheed-i-Millat Liaquat Ali Khan, has been rightly proposed by many as the leading option in this regard. It is hoped that the government will not sideline the associates of Quaid-i-Azam who led the front all through the Pakistan movement.

ENTRANCE TEST: The Medical and Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT) was recently conducted across the country, including Sindh where I sat the exam. It was an unusually hot day and there were no proper arrangements in place. The presence of out-of-syllabus questions made things worse for the candidates. It was like playing with the future of so many candidates who now find their dreams shattered because they could not focus on the paper for which they had been preparing for months. The relevant authorities should take remedial steps immediately.

POLICY MESS: Pakistan’s foreign policy has been rather directionless over the last few years. The acceptance of our proposal by the United Nations to observe an International Day to Combat Islamophobia has been the lone success, but, generally speaking, we have only earned the displeasure of the United States, China and Saudi Arabia. This is rather unfortunate.
