NAMES AND WELFARE

Published December 5, 2022

NAMES AND WELFARE: Naming roads, buildings, parks, etc. after national heroes is a common practice, but naming a welfare scheme which is funded by the state through the taxes raised by the government is not a thing that is common in the world or something that makes much logical sense. There is a lot of good about the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) except its title. It gives a misleading impression that the programme has been funded by a single person or family. It should be renamed appropriately.

BIOGAS PLANT: This refers to the report ‘Sindh CM okays land acquisition, biogas plant installation for bus projects’ (Nov 11). Karachi’s Cattle Colony has the highest number of buffaloes in Pakistan, and the disposal of their refuse, which is often scattered on the road, is a challenge. This project will eliminate such issues and will also help generate green fertiliser as a by-product. Biogas plant is very easy to install. There are thousands of small and a few medium-sized plants all over Pakistan. This project will not only give our buses clean exhaust, but will also inspire others to launch similar projects.

CELLPHONE SNATCHING: The tech-centric measures taken by Sindh police recently to curb cellphone snatching should be applauded, but it might take time to be functional in its true spirit. To have another way out of the cellphone-snatching quicksand, the government should better chalk out a policy to ban the purchase of cellphones without a proper box, documentation, and IMEI number. If there are no buyers, the ‘business’ of snatching will not be lucrative.

ROADS BLUES: The road infrastructure of Karachi has turned into a network of potholes, making every commute bumpy and bothersome. The condition of the roads since the monsoon ended months ago is a true depiction of the ineptness of the local administration. The authorities should wake up and start repair works immediately.
