LAHORE: Commissioner Aamir Jan on Tuesday announced shutting down all the markets in the city at 10pm due to worsening smog situation.

The announcement came after the commissioner held a meeting with the commercial and wholesale traders of the city at his office. The trader community approved the decision of closing markets at 10pm on weekdays and to observe the complete shutdown on Sunday.

Mr Jan said around 6m vehicles were operating in the city on a daily basis and 47pc of smog was caused by the traffic. He urged all the people to play their role in controlling smog as it was leaving a negative impact on the public health. He said the city district administration was controlling factories and arresting the people for burning garbage.

The commissioner will submit the market closure report in the Lahore High Court on Wednesday (today).
