HYDERABAD, Jan 2: Awami Tehrik chief Rasool Bux Palijo has said revival of the Council of Common Interests with a view to deciding the Kalabagh dam issue is not acceptable to the people of Sindh.

In a statement faxed to Dawn here on Monday, he alleged that the federal government was a party in the water dispute between Punjab and Sindh. Under the circumstances, he said, federal authorities could not appoint committees or councils as judges to decide the water issue.

Mr Palijo said no one could be deceived by what he called farce appointment of the CCI to decide the water issue because it included people who were against Sindh. He said only an impartial world tribunal acceptable to both Sindh and Punjab could amicably settle the issue.

DEMONSTRATION: The Sindh People’s Youth Organization-SB held a protest demonstration outside the press club here on Monday against the proposed construction of the Kalabagh dam and delay in dispensation of justice in the Mir Murtaza Bhutto murder case.

Speaking on the occasion, Shabbir Solangi, Ali Mohammad Jamali, Abdul Razzaq and others said President Gen Pervez Musharraf was trying to prolong his rule by announcing construction of the dam.

They said that it was despite the fact that the project had been rejected not only by three provincial assemblies but also by the people of the country at large.

They said construction of the dam would create hatred among the provinces.

They also lashed out at Sindhi leaders supporting the dam.

TEACHERS: The Mehran Elementary and Secondary Teachers Association has decided to launch a protest movement throughout the province from Jan 20 if its demands are not accepted by Jan 19.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the association’s working committee held here on Sunday. Association president Mohammad Qasim Pathan presided over the meeting.

The meeting demanded that teachers’ employment quota of 25 per cent should be restored, uniformity in rural and urban allowances should be maintained and dearness and running scale to teachers should be given from the date of appointment.

DRAFTSMEN: All-Pakistan Technical Draftsmen Federation chairman Hafiz Matloob Ahmad Chishti has thanked the Sindh chief minister for approving a summary restoring the nomenclature of the public health engineering department.

In a statement issued here on Monday, he also appreciated efforts of the adviser on local government, Waseem Akhtar, and the Sindh chief secretary, Fazalur Rehman, in this regard.

He said the action taken by the chief minister would resolve problems of employees of the department.

recovery demanded: Residents of Goth Hote Khan Jakhro, Matiari district, have appealed to authorities to ensure recovery of Mohammad Paryal Jakhro allegedly arrested by police on Nov 22.

Speaking at a news conference at the press club here on Monday, relatives of Mohammad Paryal – Mohammad Hayat, Shahmir Khan and Mohammad Yaqoob – alleged that police had illegally detained Mohammad Paryal at the insistence of a feudal lord.

They said they were being pressured to withdraw the case of the murder of Khuda Bux Lund who had been killed four and a half months ago in Matiari.

They claimed that Mohammad Paryal was shifted from the Matiari police station after they filed an application in the sessions court for his recovery. They said they had learnt that Mohammad Paryal had now been kept in a private jail of the feudal lord.

They said Mohammad Paryal’s life was in danger and appealed to authorities to ensure his recovery, failing which they would stage a sit-in on the National Highway.
