KARACHI: Police on Saturday claimed that a ‘hardened criminal’ allegedly involved in the recent killing of a young NED University student on University Road was shot dead by his own ‘accomplice,’ who was fleeing after an encounter in Gulshan-i-Iqbal.

East-SSP Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi said that the accused identified as Jumma Khan was shot dead during the encounter near the Federal Urdu University.

The officer described the deceased suspect as a ‘most wanted’ criminal.

Mr Shirazi said that earlier on Dec 15, Bilal, an NED university student, was gunned down when he bravely fought with armed dacoits who were looting a few people sitting at a roadside hotel outside the NED University within the remit of the Mobina Town police station.

The dacoits opened fire on him and escaped, said the SSP.

An FIR was registered at the Mobina Town police station of murder and robbery.

The officer recalled that one suspect namely Nizamuddin had already been arrested with wounds after an encounter on Dec 16 while the killed suspect Jumma Khan, aka Laali, had managed to escape.

“Today with spy information, a raid was conducted for the arrest of Jumma Khan near the Urdu University and an encounter ensued.”

The suspect fired straight at police, who took positions in self-defence. Resultantly, Jumma Khan was killed from ‘firing of his own co-accused who managed to escape’, claimed the SSP.

The police recovered one 30-bore pistol. The suspect was a resident of Jamali Pull area and was a ‘hardened criminal’.
