ISLAMABAD: Former Chairman Senate and PPP leader Mian Raza Rabbani has asked the government to declare 2023 as the “Year of the Constitution, 1973”.

In a statement he said a national committee must be formed to carry out celebrations throughout the year. He said 2023 is the Golden Jubilee Year, of the 1973 Constitution.

The , 1973 Constitution was passed by the National Assembly on the 10th April, 1973, given assent on the 12th April, 1973, and promulgated on the 14th August, 1973.

During this period there were constitutional deviations from 1977 - 1985 and from 1999 - 2002.

He said the 1973 Constitution is the lynchpin of the Federation. It provides for the Fundamental Rights of the citizens, it provides a Parliamentary and Federal form of Government, it defines the powers of the various Organs of the state through trichotomy of power.

“It is the document that holds the Federation, it’s importance needs to be stressed on the younger generation. This year must signify that the people will resist any deviation from the path prescribed by the Constitution, 1973.”
