ISLAMABAD: The federal capital saw over 36 crimes per day in the year 2022.

These included last month’s terrorism incident in I-10/4 in which a policeman and a driver were martyred after a suicide bomber detonated an explosive.

Police officers told Dawn on condition of anonymity that 13,409 cases of criminal activities were registered in the capital last year. Of these, 11,332 cases were related to crime against property — robbery, snatching, burglary, theft and auto theft — and 2,077 were crime against persons such as murder, attempted murder, hurt, kidnapping for ransom, kidnapping and rape, fatal and non-fatal accidents.

The officers said there were 43 cases of dacoities, including 23 after May 21, 2022, when the current police chief took charge. Of these, 17 cases were registered in Rural Zone, 14 in Saddar and six each in Industrial Area and City zones of the police.

The police also registered 2,180 robbery cases, including 1,200 after May 21, the officers said, adding out of the total 684, 675, 646 and 175 robbery cases were registered in Rural, Industrial Area, Saddar, and City zones, respectively.

There were 92 robberies in which armed men either murdered or injured the victims. Besides, 194, 85 and 92 shop, house and vehicle robberies, respectively, were also reported.

Likewise, 1,392 cases of snatching were also registered, 734 after May 21, they said, adding out of the total 481, 424, 359 and 128 cases were registered in Rural, Industrial Area, Saddar, and City zones, respectively.

Similarly, the police also registered 1,187 cases of burglary, including 639 after May 21, out of which 492, 378, 195 and 122 cases were registered in the Rural, Saddar, City and Industrial Area zones.

Furthermore, 719 vehicle theft cases, including 442 since May 22, were registered and 242, 173, 157 and 147 of them were registered in Saddar, City, Industrial Area and Rural zones.

Besides, 3,428 cases, including 2,095 since May 2022, of motorcycle thefts were also registered and 1152, 937, 710 and 629 of the cases were registered in Saddar, Rural, City and Industrial Area zones. The police also registered 122 fatal and 124 non-fatal road accidents.

The officers said 177, 288, 409 and 954 cases of murder, attempted murder, hurt and kidnapping/rape, respectively, were also registered by the police.

The police also registered three cases of kidnapping for ransom, all after May 21.
