BAHAWALPUR: With the date for elections in Punjab soon to be announced, the former ruling Pakistan Tehreek-I-Insaf (PTI) has begun the process for selecting candidates, as it received applications from 35 party ticket aspirants for the 10 provincial assembly seats of Bahawalpur district.

PTI south Punjab president Senator Aun Abbas Pabbi was tasked with selecting the candidates for award of tickets. In this connection, a meeting chaired by Mr Pabbi was held on Sunday where 35 applications were received. The meeting decided to examine the applications and refer them to the parliamentary board for a final decision on the tickets.

SHOT AT, INJURED: The Kotwali police registered a case under sections 324, 427, 109, 148, 149 and 506 of the

PPC against 11 people, including the nominated Abdul Hadi, Abdul Rehman and others, for allegedly shooting at and injuring an army major on Zanana Hospital Road the other day.

Reportedly, the vehicle the suspects were travelling in hit Maj Junaid Khalid’s car that was said to be parked wrongly, which sparked off a heated argument. In the ensuing scuffle, the major pulled out his pistol allegedly in defence that the suspects snatched and fired at him, which hit him in his back.

According to complainant Hissan Khalid, his brother suffered injuries and was hospitalised where he is said to be out of danger.

Maj Khalid was said to be posted in Abbottabad and was visiting the city.

WOMEN SHOS: In pursuance of the orders of the Punjab inspector general of police, the district police chiefs of Bahawalpur and Lodhran have posted sub-inspectors Zonaira Latif and Fouzia Sahar as station house officers of Inayati police station in Khairpur Tamewali tehsil of Bahawalpur district and Dunyapur City police station in Lodhran district, respectively.

ACCIDENT: Around 20 passengers suffered injuries with several of them seriously when a van they were travelling in hit a roadside tree on Choonawala Road near Hasilpur, about 90 kilometres from here.

According to rescue officials, the van carrying members of the same family was returning to village 204-Murad from Vehari. When it reached Fateh bridge on Choonawala Road near Hasilpur, a motorcyclist appeared from the opposite direction and in a bid to save him, the van driver lost control over the vehicle, which smashed against a roadside tree.

On receiving information, rescuers rushed to the scene and pulled out the passengers from the vehicle and rushed them to Hasilpur THQ Hospital where several of them were stated to be in a serious condition. The motorcyclist also suffered serious injuries and was shifted to hospital in serious condition.
