KARACHI: A young man was shot dead by Lyari gangsters over non-payment of protection money in the Kalri area, police said on Wednesday.

City SSP Arif Aziz said that Danish Memon was sitting at his shop near Khadda Market on Tuesday night, when armed assailants fired at him and fled by taking advantage of darkness as the area was under scheduled loadshedding at that time.

He suffered critical bullet wounds and was taken to the Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi where he died during treatment on Wednesday.

Quoting the victim’s family, SSP Aziz said that criminals linked to Wasiullah Lakho-led gang had demanded extortion from the shopkeeper and it appeared that he was killed due to non-payment of protection money.

However, he said that victim and his family did not inform police because of the ‘fears’.
