Historic bazaar

MANY of us know about Gwadar’s ‘strategic location’ and its ‘deep seaport’. These are often the words used for Gwadar in almost every media writeup, be it an article or a script. But at best a few, if any, realise that Gwadar is more than those words.

There is a historic market, the Shahi Bazaar. People have lived here for centuries. Shahi Bazaar is close to every person’s heart living in Gwadar. Many believe that it is one of the oldest markets in Balochistan and has been a public place dating back a few centuries.

Sadly, the market has fallen victim to neglect that has led to several issues. The bazaar today is congested as it is located along a narrow street that runs with commercial buildings on both sides. There are structures made of wood and bricks that are lying in a dilapidated condition. Such structures include an old fort, which is other than the huge Omani Fort, which is also called the Portuguese Fort by some.

Shahi Bazaar is in urgent need of official attention. It is obvious that the Shahi Bazaar will no more be the local economic hub as it used to be in its glory days. However, with due renovation and addition of certain facilities, the place can turn into a beautiful heritage site and a tourist-friendly spot. This will add to the beauty of the province, and will also be a source of income for the locals.

The authorities concerned should spruce up this bazaar and save the historical site for future generations.
