The bridegroom, his father and some relatives were arrested by the police on Friday night when they indulged in festive firing during the wedding.

Police officials said that the firing in the air was banned in the district and SHO of every police station had been directed to ensure strict implementation of the restriction in their respective jurisdictions.

When contacted, the SHO Swabi city police station told Dawn that after coming to know about the festive firing, a police party reached the Maneri village. “We have arrested the bridegroom, Umar Farooq, his father, Rahim Dad and some relatives and confined them in the lock-up,” he said.

It has been learnt that leaders of political parties and influential people of the area contacted the police for releasing the bridegroom and his family members, but the police refused.
