SWABI: The price of a 50-kilogramme bag of wheat has reached Rs6,000 in Swabi district, traders and consumers said on Wednesday.

Talking to Dawn, consumers said it was really an alarming situation because they had never seen such a high price of the grain, making it difficult for them to meet their basic staple need.

Traders said they could not rule out further increase in wheat rate because the wheat harvesting season was still two months away, leading to increase in flour price.

“The cost of a 50kg wheat flour bag may rise to Rs6,600,” Sher Khan, a trader in Maneri Bala village, said.

Traders said survival of the poor sections of society was difficult amid the record inflation, which would further increase in Ramazan.

Meanwhile, the poor consumers demanded of the provincial government to increase the subsidised wheat flour supply in Ramazan, enabling them to meet their basic food need.

AGREEMENT SIGNED: The Khwaja Fareed University of Engineering and Information Technology (KFUEIT), Rahim Yar Khan, and Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding to promote joint academic, research and development activities.

The MoU was inked by Prof Fazal Ahmad Khalid, GIK Institute Rector, and Prof Mohammad Suleman Tahir, Vice-Chancellor of KFUEIT, during a ceremony.
