THE University of Karachi once again remained in the limelight for the wrong reasons. The academic process recently remained disrupted and the sword is still hanging overhead as no one is quite sure when the whole thing might shuts down again. The sufferers, as always, will be the students.
The administrative, academic and financial crises have been afflicting the university for long. It is not uncommon for public universities in the country to struggle financially and otherwise owing to a variety of reasons.
The Karachi University Teachers Society had partially boycotted classes in response to the administration’s unwillingness to address certain issues. The teachers planned to unanimously issue a vote of no confidence against the vice-chancellor, which would have been unprecedented. Unfortunately, students always happen to be the ones who have to bear the brunt of such a situation, and the resulting academic loss is unimaginable. It is imperative to find a way to end this lingering crisis, and to prevent further damage to the institution’s reputation.
