KOHAT: Customs officials recovered a large cache of illegal ammunition from a truck and arrested the driver near an old toll plaza on the Indus Highway here on Wednesday night.
Spokesperson for the department told Dawn on Thursday that the magazines with bullets of rifles worth Rs23.34 million were seized while being smuggled from Malakand to Punjab. He added that the cache included 33,160 rounds of M-16, Kalashnikov, M4, and G-3 rifles.
He said a case was registered under the Customs Act against truck driver Syed Mir, who was a resident of Shaheen Muslim Town in Peshawar.
WATER SUPPLY: Kohat deputy commissioner Azmatullah Khan Wazir has promised a “permanent” solution to the water shortage in Lachi tehsil here.
He told reporters at the Kohat Press Club on Thursday that he had directed the Water Supply and Sanitation Company, irrigation department, cantonment officer and tehsil municipal administration to begin a joint crackdown on encroachments.
The DC said steps were also being taken to discourage the issuance of NOCs to the housing societies being developed on fertile land.
He said free flour had been distributed to 80 per cent of the people in Kohat and Darra Adamkhel areas.
Mr Wazir said a large-scale crackdown had been launched on vehicles with tinted glasses and motorcycles without number plates in Kohat district.
He said assistant commissioners of Darra Adamkhel subdivision were leading operations against terrorism.
The DC said he would speak to authorities about the people’s complaints about the shifting of Nadra offices to a public library.
He said a strategy was under consideration for the delivery of domicile certificates to the people on their doorstep.
