ZOO CLOSURE: The news of Karachi zoo’s possible closure is of great concern. It will be a step to deprive the city of one of its public hangouts of which there is already a dearth. The demand for shutting the zoo down comes from some socio-political circles shocked by the inefficient and unprofessional way in which an ailing elephant was handled there recently. This was no doubt a sad incident, but zoo’s closure is not the solution. Instead, inquiries should be made to fix the responsibilities for administrative or medical failure behind the incident. It would be better if the management of the zoo is handed over to some renowned charitable organisation so that people of Karachi, especially the children, may not miss out on the joy of visiting the zoo, which has historic importance of its own.

YOUNG CRIMINALS: The incidents of theft, kidnapping, mugging, snatching and eve-teasing are on the rise in Kasur. There is an atmosphere of insecurity and fear, and people think twice before going out after sunset. Most such crimes are committed by teenagers, and it is painful to see youngsters being caught by police every now and then. Being elders it is our moral responsibility to minimise our children’s exposure to violence and to prevent them from going astray.

TOBACCO USE: The government has finally taken the much-needed step of increasing taxes on cigarettes. However, it is important to remember that it is not a standalone measure that may automatically deliver the desired results. Pakistan needs to clamp down on cigarettes without giving the smokers any alternative so that they may be feel either encouraged or forced to quit. The risk to smokers and those in their close circles is massive. We may have to start gradually, but the final target should be clear and unambiguous.
