DIGITAL CENSUS: Anything ‘digital’ is supposed to make things easy. One wonders if the ongoing digital census falls under the same description. If media reports are anything to go by, the exercise is far from satisfactory and the ‘digital’ part of the matter has only made things worse. The enumerators should have been given training and gadgets long before they went out for field work on their own.

HIGH CHARGES: The Balochistan Public Service Commission (BPSC) has application charges Rs1,000 for grade 18 posts, Rs600 for grade 16-17, and Rs400 for grade 11-14 posts. These charges are way too high compared to what other provinces charge from the applicants. Ironically, there is not even a single examination centre in the province. All tests are conducted in schools and colleges without facilities, and the announcement of results takes months. The authorities need to pay heed to the misery of the applicants.

DATE EXTENSION: The Federal Public Service Commission’s (FPSC) Special Central Superior Services (CSS) examination is supposed to fill the seats that have been lying vacant for long. The commission should consider fresh graduates for these posts. Majority of the universities, including Sindh University at Jamshoro, announce results in the last week of March every year. Therefore, the FPSC should extend the date of registration and give some relaxation in the cut-off date for eligibility in terms of qualification. This extension will provide an opportunity to a large number of fresh graduates.

KARACHI CRISIS: Karachi is in trouble on many counts. Most of the ills afflicting the city are because of financial constraints. The service delivery is pathetic. From infrastructure to education, the misery of the city that feeds the nation is depressing. It is time we reset our priorities. The city surely deserves better.
