Spot the location!
Have you planned your picnic yet, or haven’t decided anything? Yes, I know when it comes to picnics, location is the key to making the day memorable. The vacation has started so you may have a lot of plans in mind, but first pick a spot and plan accordingly. Choose a spot such as a park, lakeside, or beach, etc., but always look for areas with ample shade and a nice ambiance to escape the blazing sun when needed and also get a chance to relax.
Beach picnics
If you’re choosing the beach, which I know most of you who have access to the sea would choose, there are a few additional considerations to keep in mind.
Beach-friendly food: Opt for snacks that are easy to handle and won’t attract sand, such as wraps, sandwiches and fruits. Avoid bringing messy sauces or foods that can quickly spoil in the heat.
Beach shade: While the sun and sand are delightful, it’s crucial to have some shade to retreat when the heat becomes intense. Bring a beach umbrella (if you can), sun shelter, or even a pop-up tent for a cosy, shaded spot. If you don’t have any of these just take a regular umbrella and a hat with you.
Beach gear: In addition to your picnic essentials, pack items specific to the beach, such as towels, beach mats, sunscreen, extra hats, sunglasses and extra clothing. Don’t forget beach toys like buckets, shovels, and beach balls to keep yourself and the little ones entertained.
Lakeside picnics
If you’re planning a picnic by the lake, here are some key considerations:
Water safety: Both on the beach as well as on the lake, prioritise water safety. Keep a close eye on your family and small children and ensure that you and your little siblings are in close contact with the elders at all times. You can also plan some water activities, but with floatation devices like rings, etc. If swimming is on the agenda, bring life jackets and water toys, according to your age.
Insect repellent: Lakeside and park areas often have insects, so be prepared with insect repellent to keep bugs at bay.
Park picnics
If you choose a park for your picnic, keep these considerations in mind:
Park regulations: Always follow the park’s rules and regulations. For instance, don’t litter, or don’t bring toys that are not allowed, such as balls and avoid toddler motor toys.
Nature appreciation: Parks are a treasure trove of natural beauty. Observe and appreciate the flora and fauna around you. Consider bringing binoculars. Create a nature scavenger hunt list to make the experience educational and exciting.
Summer-friendly cuisine
A successful picnic revolves around mouth-watering treats and refreshing drinks. Opt for light and refreshing snacks like finger sandwiches, fresh fruits, or if you like desi food, then kabab and paratha rolls are ideal, and everyone’s favourite item biryani — come rain or sunshine, it is the only food that never misses any menu list.
However, keep in mind the days are getting hotter, so choose dishes that can withstand the summer heat and won’t spoil quickly. Salads, wraps, or chilled pasta dishes make for excellent options.
Don’t forget to pack your favourite beverages, such as thirst-quenching lemonade, sherbet or soft drinks. To keep your food fresh, (if you can arrange) consider using insulated containers or coolers.
Pro tip: Freeze some grapes, watermelons or lemons beforehand to enjoy refreshing snacks that double as natural coolers!
Stay hydrated
Because you will be away from your house, so try to stay hydrated under the scorching sun. Bring lots of water to keep everyone hydrated throughout the day. It’s wise to pack extra water bottles to splash on your face, neck, or feet to beat the heat.
Games and entertainment
To make the picnic fun-packed and the energy high, plan a variety of games and activities suitable for the outdoors. Pack a Frisbee, cricket bat and ball, a soccer ball, or badminton set to get everyone moving and laughing. If you’re in a more relaxed mood, bring along some board games to keep the fun going throughout the day.
Music
Set the mood with your favourite tunes. Create a summertime playlist with cheerful and uplifting songs that add a vibrant touch to the picnic ambiance. Don’t forget to pack portable speakers for everyone to enjoy the music together.
Clean-up and waste management
While indulging in the beauty of your picnic spot, it’s important to remember that keeping the environment clean is your responsibility too. Bring along garbage bags to gather the trash and leave the picnic area just as clean as you found it.
I am always saddened to see picnic spots littered with empty cans, plates, wrappers and other garbage left behind by visitors. We are a civilised nation, please remember to always collect and take your trash with you and dump in a designated dumping area.
Don’t forget a safety kit
Lastly, no matter where your picnic adventure takes you, it’s crucial to have an essential safety kit on hand. Ensure your peace of mind by packing the following items: a first aid kit with band aids, antiseptic wipes and pain relievers; sunscreen; insect repellent and antihistamine cream for insect bites; an extra water bottle for washing, a pair of scissors, elastic bandage, wet wipes or a small towel for cooling down; plastic bags for waste disposal; and a cell phone or portable charger for emergencies.
Apart from that, always pack an extra suit with you to avoid any mishap. With these essentials in your safety kit, you’ll be well-prepared to handle any minor mishaps or unexpected situations that may arise.
By considering these tips and packing the essentials, you’ll be well-prepared for an unforgettable day filled with laughter, good food and summer delights. So, embrace the warmth of the sun, enjoy the great outdoors, and embark on a sensational picnic adventure, whether it’s on the beach, by the lake, or in a picturesque park.
Happy picnicking, young adventurers!
