KARACHI: Investigators on Sunday launched a probe into the killing of two policemen in Sohrab Goth on Saturday night in an alleged shoot-out with criminals.

Head constables Rehmatullah, 34, and Abdul Hakeem, 45, were killed by unknown assailants near Indus Plaza behind Al-Asif Square in Sohrab Goth.

Area SHO Mazhar Awan said a case was registered against unknown persons under Section 302 (premeditated murder), 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code read with Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act of 1997.

East SSP Zubair Nazeer Shaikh told Dawn it was not a targeted killing incident. He said the policemen had received information about presence of criminals in the area. When they arrived at the spot, the criminals opened fire. He said investigators had made some progress in the case.

Meanwhile, the funeral prayers for the martyred policemen were held at the Police Headquarters Garden, which was attended by Inspector General of Police Ghulam Nabi Memon, Karachi police chief Javed Odho and other senior officers.

The IGP vowed that the suspects, which he described as ‘anti-people’, would be taken to task.
